Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles are available in glazed and unglazed finishes, but for the purpose of this article we will talk about glazed ceramic tiles as these tend to be the most popular.

So what exactly is a glazed ceramic tile? Well they're a 2-part tile made of the backer and glaze. The backer is made from soft clay sourced by the manufacturer. The clay is compressed and shaped into a flat tile. It is then fired in a kiln at a high temperature, which bakes the clay and makes it harder. The longer the clay tile stays in the kiln and the higher the temperature, the harder it becomes.

A glazed ceramic tile is covered in a glaze, which can be coloured to create various different styles. Some glazes are totally smooth and come out shining, which makes the tile look elegant and upmarket when installed. However, some ceramic tiles come with a textured glaze that can make the tile look like it has a grain. Whilst this style can look extremely effective in the right situation it can be hard to maintain as dirt easily accumulates in the grooves.

Ceramic tiles go back a long way and there is a massive range available to choose from, so if you are looking for a new floor tile or wall tile then you won't be stuck for choice.
