Travertine tile benfits & drawbacks

So what is the main benefit of a travertine tile? Well it certainly isn't ease of maintenance! travertine is beautiful, what more can I say? If you want a floor that is breathtaking, a real focal point in your home then I cannot stress enough just how wonderful a travertine floor looks when installed!

You can get travertine in a range of styles, across both types (natural and honed). If I was installing a new travertine floor I would definitely spend that little bit extra on getting the honed version, just for that little extra ease of use. Travertine is a limestone tile that is available in a wide range of colours. You'll find it available in light creams that are quite close to white, earthy creams, browns, rusty tones and right into red tones. The range of colours is broad, but this gives you a lot to choose from and gives you flexibility. The other main benefit of the range of colours is that you will be able to find a travertine to suit your existing style of furniture.

Drawbacks

The main drawback to travertine is maintenance, but this is more so for natural non-honed travertines. For the non-honed travertine you will need to clean down the floor regularly, watch you feet in case you bring in dirt and rick water building up in the indentations. You will need to maintain the floor through an annual sealing, which involves buying a sealant (go for Fila), removing the existing sealant, cleaning the floor and then painting of several coats of the sealant. You also will not be able to walk over the floor during this entire process, which can take more than 24 hours depending on the time taken for the floor to dry.

Travertine is a balancing act. You just need to ask yourself if you are prepared to pay for and take the time to maintain such a floor. My opinion? Go for it! A travertine floor is something else!
